Phoenix Aquathlon 2014

The Phoenix Aquathlon Series is made up of three races for adults (age 15+) and two races for children (age 8-14) on a flat and fast circuit, starting and finishing at The Guildford Lido. The swim takes place in the open air, 50m lido pool and the run route takes you around the traffic free perimeter of the neighbouring Stoke Park.

All three races in the aquathlon series are identical so it’s a great way to compare your times for each race and see how your fitness improves throughout the season!

When registering a relay team where both athletes are under 18, you will be required to enter a Team Captain who must be over 18 – a parent or guardian).

CHILDREN’S RACES START AT THE SAME TIME AS THE ADULTS AT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE POOL. A PARENT/GUARDIAN (OVER 18) MUST BE ON SITE FOR THE DURATION OF THEIR CHILD’S RACE. CHILDREN MUST NOT BE LEFT UNATTENDED AT ANY TIME. THE PARENT/GUARDIAN MUST ALSO SIGN A DISCLAIMER, INCLUDING CONTACT DETAILS, WHEN THEY ARRIVE AT THE VENUE.

Adult Races (15+)

(All three races will run from 19.00 to 21.00)

The swim – Adults will race over 500m as 10 lengths of the 50m laned pool. You’ll be set off at 30 second intervals and swim up on one side of the lane, turning at the end and swimming back down the other side (clockwise) and then ducking under the lane rope, into the next lane. When you reach the end of the final length you’ll climb out of the pool using the steps. You will be asked to estimate your swim time over 500m at registration so you will be placed with other swimmers of a similar standard. This is another good reason to pre-register. If you leave registration to the day you may find we have to place you at the end, with the very fast swimmers!

The run – 5k on a traffic free route round the perimeter of the beautiful Stoke Park situated right next to the the lido. You will exit the lido at the side gate, run up a slight incline and down onto the main path that traces the perimeter of the park. It’s an out and back loop and you’ll turn at the 2.5km mark.

Please note if you are under 18 a parent/guardian (somebody over 18) must be in attendance and you will not be able to race if they are not able to sign a disclaimer for you on the day.

Children’s Races (8-14 yrs)

(Both races will run from 19.00 to 20.00)

Youths (age 15-16), Junior B (age 17-18) & Junior C (age 19) will race with adults 500 m swim & 5 km run.

The swim – The Children will race over varying distances dependant on their age. This is in keeping with the BTF guidelines (British Triathlon Federation). Their age group is determined by the age they will be by the 31st December of this year.

The lido is a heated open air Olympic size (50m) pool of a max depth of 2m. It is set in 4 acres of landscaped gardens. The pool will be set up with lane ropes. The Tristar competitors (age 8) will swim one length, this will be the outside lane, closest to the edge. They will exit the pool via the steps at the end. The older children racing over more than one length, will swim up one side and down the other, swim under the lane rope and repeat that, then exit via the steps. They will be set off at 30 second intervals and will start in the water, there will be NO diving.

At booking/registration they will be asked to estimate their swim time so they can be placed with swimmers of a similar standard. This is another reason to pre- register, this way they can ensure they are not placed at the end with faster swimmers.

The run – This will be over varying distances. This will take place on the traffic free route around the paths in stoke park. The children will never be out of sight of a marshal. They will all run an out and back route. (ie, they will run to a marker and turn and run back). The route will be heavily marshalled and will take them out of the lido and up along a path, they will run to a coloured marker turn and run back.

Adult & Junior (age 15+) Team Relays ( 500m swim, 5k run)

This is the first year we are introducing team relays to the Phoenix Aquathlon Series. If you’d like to do the swim but the run is not your thing and you have a friend who prefers the run then why not team up and have a go in a relay team together?

Equally if you have a junior (age15+) who would like to race with their Mum or Dad, you can also enter together. As each team member is only doing one leg, you will be each racing over the longer adult distances, parents will be asked to sign a disclaimer if their junior is racing with them. The swim will be 500m and the run will be 5k run and you will swap the timing chip over in transition. The rules are as follows: the team member completing the swim leg, must remove the timing chip and place it on the right wrist of their fellow team member before they head out on the run leg.

When registering a relay team where both athletes are under 18, you will be required to enter a Team Captain. This will be someone who is over 18, a parent or guardian. It will suggest you are a team of 3! Team Captains can relax you will not be expected to race…

What to wear

A towel for transition might also be useful if you want to quickly dry your feet before the run leg. You’ll leave your run kit in the clearly marked transition area during the swim leg. You may want to bring a sweatshirt or other warm clothing to put on afterwards as it can get chilly in the evenings!
